Pregnancy Loss in the Second Trimester

Pregnancy loss during the second trimester is less common.  When it happens between 12 and 20 weeks, it is called second trimester miscarriage.  Second trimester miscarriage is often caused by a condition called cervical incompetence or cervical insufficiency.  This is when a woman’s cervix (opening to the womb) opens too soon, before the baby is ready to be born.  Women who have had second trimester miscarriages should see a doctor before they plan their next pregnancy.  In addition, future pregnancies may require extra testing and monitoring.  There are medication and procedures that a woman can have to help her next pregnancy carry successfully
