How to Treat Postpartum Depression and Anxiety

Treating postpartum depression depends on your health history, how bad the symptoms are, and your treatment preferences. Therapy is a great way to discuss your feelings with a healthcare professional and receive feedback. Joining a support group can also be a form of group therapy that can provide relief.

If the depression is more severe, medications can be prescribed to help you through this time.  These medications are called anti-depressants or anti-anxiety meds and most are safe with breastfeeding.  Just because you start medication does not mean you have to take it forever.  This medication can be a temporary way to help you through a difficult time.

Lastly, it is important to remember to take care of yourself during this time.  Little things can help your mood in big ways such as going for a walk outside, being in the sunshine, eating a balanced diet, finding someone to watch your baby so that you have a few hours to yourself, or relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation or yoga.
