Pregnancy loss during the second trimester is less common. When it happens between 12 and 20 weeks, it is called second trimester miscarriage. Second trimester miscarriage is often caused by a condition called cervical incompetence or cervical insufficiency. This is when a woman’s cervix (opening to the womb) opens too soon, before the baby is ready to be born.
