Opioid Overdose Action and Response and Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness
Lauren Radcliffe, MPH, Overdose Prevention Coordinator at the Utah Department of Health, presented on recognizing the risk factors for an opioid overdose. She also covered how to identify and respond to an opioid overdose and how to administer Naloxone. Kayla Jensen, Peer Support Specialist and Karissa MacDonald, Peer Recovery Coach at USARA, shared their lived experience as moms in long-term recovery. They talked about USARA recovery support services, Addiction Recovery Coaching in Healthcare and Emergency Settings (ARCHES), Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), along with the language of recovery and putting a face and voice on recovery.

Katherine Bark and Candice Frude, MSN, RN cover how Home Visiting programs work in Utah and Wyoming. They discuss evidence-based models, program eligibility, visit schedules, topics covered, how to refer, marketing, program locations and contacts. Home Visiting outcomes from the families and children served show the importance of connecting families with needed resources and referrals to help them parent effectively.
Intimate Partner Violence and Resources
Audrey Jiricko, M.D. discusses Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), how to screen patients, the statistics, health consequences and costs of IPV. She also covers positive messaging, what is reportable and the power and control wheel. Marcela Smid, M.D. covers prenatal substance use prevalence estimates. She discusses past Utah studies attempting to estimate prenatal substance use prevalence. Marcela talks about the results of the C-PAST study, including prevalence by region, substance type, comparing to historical results, study strengths, limitations and conclusions.
Fentanyl in Utah
Steve Barnes, MPH and Sydney Bowen, MPH share data on Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid approved for treating severe pain. Deaths involving Fentanyl continue to rise with an increase in the availability of counterfeit pills that contain Fentanyl. Fentanyl test strips are a harm reduction intervention, along with increasing the availability of Naloxone.
Tobacco Cessation Resources
Sandra Schulthies, MS, talks about resources available through the Utah Tobacco Quit Line which supports people wanting to quit all forms of tobacco. Information is presented on special cessation services for pregnant women including calls with a coach and text messaging support along with how clinicians can connect patients to the Utah Tobacco Quit Line www.waytoquit.org.

Alfred R. Romeo, RN, PhD, provides an overview of MothertoBaby Utah. MotherToBaby provides evidence-based information on the safety of medications and other exposures during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Their resources include Fact Sheets on drugs and substance use such as alcohol, fentanyl, marijuana, methamphetamine, and Opioids, along with depression and anxiety medications.
Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS)
Marcela Smid, a Maternal Fetal Medicine physician at the University of Utah and medical director of the Substance Use & Pregnancy- Recovery, Addiction, Dependence (SUPeRAD) clinic, presents her research from the Novel Psychoactive Umbilical Cord (NEPTUNE) study. She also discusses the definition of NPS, examples of NPS, and results from the Novel Psychoactive Substance Use Survey and Focus Groups (NESO).
