Power Your Life

The importance of sleep

Getting enough good quality sleep is an important part of a healthy life. It’s recommended that adults get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.

The quality of sleep you get is just as important as the amount of sleep you get. Signs of poor sleep include not feeling rested after you get enough sleep, waking up during the night, and snoring.

Benefits of getting enough sleep include:

  • Decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and depression.
  • Less stress and a better mood.
  • Helps you get sick less often.
  • Helps you think more clearly and do better at school and work.

Tips for better sleep

If you have a hard time falling asleep or don’t feel like you’re getting quality sleep, try some of these tips:

  • Go to bed the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning, even on the weekends.
  • Make sure the room you sleep in is quiet, dark, and at a comfortable temperature.
  • Avoid caffeine before bedtime.
  • Avoid taking naps late in the day.
  • Don’t keep electronics, like phones, TVs, and computers in the room where you sleep.
  • Exercise during the day to help you fall asleep more easily at night.

Many people struggle to get quality sleep. If you are consistently not getting a good night’s sleep after trying the tips above, you may want to seek help from a doctor.
