Balanced nutrition is important to help your body be its best. Eat a variety of foods that you enjoy.

Start by learning the basics of balanced nutrition.

Balanced eating includes a variety of:

  • Fruits
    • This includes fruit or 100% fruit juice. Fruits can be raw, cooked, fresh, frozen, canned, or dried.
  • Vegetables
    • This includes vegetables or 100% vegetable juice. Vegetables can be raw, cooked, fresh, frozen, canned, or dried.
  • Grains
    • This includes foods made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley, or other cereal grains. Try to make half of the grains you eat throughout the day whole grains.
  • Protein
    • This includes foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, and soy. 
  • Dairy
    • This includes milk, yogurt, cheese, and fortified soy milk and yogurt.

The importance of water

Your body is made up of mostly water, and it plays an important role in things your body does, like:

  • Keeping a normal body temperature.
  • Digestion.
  • Maintaining balance of body fluids.
  • Healthy kidney function.
  • Keeping joints healthy.
  • Protecting the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues.
  • Getting rid of waste.

Your urine will be light yellow or clear if you’re drinking enough water. 

If you’d like, try different ways of making drinking water easier for yourself, like adding flavor with fruit or sugar-free flavoring, or setting a regular reminder alarm on your phone.
